Exercise Physiology

What Is An Exercise Physiologist?

In Australia, exercise physiologists are government registered allied health practitioners who complete university training to design and implement exercise programs tailored to individual needs.

Our exercise physiologist Aaron Jenkins, is accredited through Exercise Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and has worked with the Geelong and Western Bulldogs AFL clubs. He has also been the strength and conditioning coach for Bell Park Football club over several seasons.

What Is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise physiologists play a crucial role in helping people improve their overall health, manage chronic conditions, recover from injuries, and enhance athletic performance by using evidence-based exercise science principles.

The primary role of an exercise physiologist is to promote physical health, improve fitness, and prevent or manage chronic diseases through exercise. They are trained to work with individuals of all ages and fitness levels, making them valuable contributors to healthcare and wellness programs.

Key responsibilities of an exercise physiologist may include:
  • Assessing a person's fitness level, medical history, and goals to create personalized exercise plans.
  • Conducting fitness assessments, such as measuring body composition, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility.
  • Monitoring and evaluating clients' progress and adjusting exercise programs as needed.
  • Providing guidance on proper exercise techniques to prevent injury and maximize results.
  • Educating clients about the physiological benefits of exercise and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Working with individuals with various medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, neurological and musculoskeletal issues, to develop safe and effective exercise strategies.
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians and physical therapists, to create comprehensive healthcare plans for patients.
  • Working in various settings, including hospitals, fitness centers, rehabilitation clinics, sports teams, and academic institutions.

How Do We Treat?

A typical consultation consists of a thorough history and physical assessment and may utilise AxIT system, giving you precise data.

The AxiT system is next-generation strength testing equipment for assessing every client type.   It is the complete objective force plate and hand held dynamometer solutions that enables measurement so that we are not guessing!

The technology behind AxIT was previously only been accessible in research labs and  elite sports clubs.  AxIT helps us to measure strength and power data, identify imbalances from side to side and track how you are progressing on your exercise and rehabilitation journey toward your goals.

  • Rehabilitation: We use the data from the AxIT system to design rehabilitation programs that result in more specific and targeted programming. This results in more efficient and specific rehabilitation outcomes.
  • Performance: The AxIT System allows us to measure relevant, actionable data about your strength, power and physical capacity that enables us to use the information you need to create a truly individualised training program.
  • Pain: Where pain is coming from weaknesses identified by your treating practitioner, our Exercise physiologist can test and create specific programs to get the strength where you need it to work with your manual therapist to reduce the pain long term.

Group Classes

Not everybody needs ongoing 1:1 attention and group classes have been shown to improve exercise program adherence on top of being a lot of fun.  These classes are affordable and you will likely be surrounded by like minded people with similar conditions.

To attended group classes you will need to have at least one session with our Exercise Physiologist to ensure you are suitable for these classes. For more information please contact the clinic.

Exercise Physiology is claimable by Private Health Insurance but, you will need to check that you are covered for this within your extras.  Also, it is possible to get a referral by your GP as part of the Chronic Disease Management Plan, which is partly covered by medicare. This covers roughly half of the cost of your visit for up to 5 visits.  It is at your GP's discretion as to whether you are eligible for this program.
