SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

We are glad to bring to you a new form of treatment available at Kardinia Osteopathic Clinic! We have been using radial shockwave therapy in the clinic since 2018.

So what is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy involves using an applicator against your skin, which generates high-pressured energy waves to break down targeted tissue.  This in turn stimulates tissue repair.  It is the same technology originally used in hospitals for the purpose of breaking down kidney stones. It has been found to be useful in relieving musculoskeletal pain and in particular stimulating healing in chronic tendinopathies.

Chronic tendinopathies are typically treated with cortisone when conservative treatment fails.  However, shockwave therapy is a great alternative to cortisone and should be used before considering cortisone as it is non invasive technique and the tendons heals faster and stronger than with the use of cortisone.  This is safe and effective walk in and walk out treatment.

There are two main actions of shockwave therapy.  One is an increased blood flow to the area to enhance healing.  Secondly it has an analgesic or numbing effect.  This analgesic effect is due to the depletion of a neurotransmitter (substance P), which is responsible for pain.

The high energy energy waves have been proven to stimulate white blood cell production which promotes healing, stimulates collagen production to aid in tendon repair and breaks down soft tissue calcification.

Dolorclast Radial Shockwave Therapy is useful for the treatment of pain related to a number of chronic soft tissue conditions including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Bursitis
  • Tennis/golfer's elbow
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Hamstring tendonitis
  • Patellar tendinopathy
  • Shin splints
  • Iliotibial band friction (ITB) syndrome
  • Chronic trigger points

The beauty of having this treatment is that there is no down time.  You can use the effected area straight after treatment if required.  This makes it perfect for all of you sportspeople out there.

We are big fans of the use of shockwave here at the clinic. If you have a chronic tendinopathy which is making life miserable and choose to have shockwave, chances are you will be a big fan of it too! Darrell has 5 years experience using  shockwave.
